My Conversation with Director Christopher Moore of Georgia Tech

Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down for a conversation with Christopher Moore, Director of the Undergraduate Music Technology program at Georgia Tech. Throughout our conversation, which you can listen to in its entirety on my YouTube channel, we discussed not only Music Technology as a whole, but also the program at Georgia Tech and upcoming events revolving it. Director Moore explained how the program at Georgia Tech focuses on creating software and hardware technologies centered around music–whether that be music notation, streaming, stem separation, or some other concentration.

My first introduction to the Music Technology program at Georgia Tech was in October of 2021, when Director Moore came to speak at my school. I was already enthralled by music technology, so everything that Director Moore showed to us during his speech deeply resonated with me. Something we talked about during our conversation was the robotics lab at Georgia Tech and how their students engineer genuine solutions to problems. One of the most fascinating subjects to me we discussed was Skywalker–a prosthetic hand the school developed for a local drummer who had lost his arm. Skywalker separates itself from other prosthetics by using ultrasound to detect movement. The way that the school was able to solve a problem in a way that made somebody’s life substantially easier by strategic combination of STEM with music made me appreciate music technology even more.

An important characteristic to Georgia Tech’s Music Technology program is its location. As Director Moore and I discussed, many large technology companies like Google and Amazon host large offices in Atlanta, which many students from the program unsurprisingly proceed to work at. Also, being the cultural hotspot that Atlanta is, the vast abundance of recording studios in the area also contributes to the opportunities available at the program. Although I had been deeply interested in music production up until this point, my time with Director Moore has truly taught me to appreciate the fascinating ways music technology is changing the industry I love so much. I encourage you to listen to the entire interview on my YouTube channel, which is linked below.
